Minister for Higher Education R.V. Deshpande has said that the State government would introduce its own ranking system to evaluate the performance of universities.

Speaking after inaugurating a green library, solar power unit and other facilities at the Karnatak University Dharwad (KUD) on Sunday, Mr. Deshpande said that under the system, universities would be ranked on over-all quality, contribution in the field of research and development, among others. It will be a first-of-its-kind experiment in the country, he said.

Taking a dig at a tendency to establish new universities, Mr. Deshpande said that there is a need to consider the feasibility on the scope of setting up such varsities. The government was trying to provide facilities and job security to teachers. He appealed to the teaching fraternity to be serious about providing quality education to students and to encourage innovative activities, he said.

Veteran journalist Patil Puttappa said that top universities gave importance to quality and merit and did not take into consideration factors such as caste and creed.
