Sonia Narang visits Laxmeshwar, meets family of deceased

While Laxmeshwar town which witnessed violence on Sunday has become near normal, Deputy Inspector-General of Police of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Sonia Narang paid a visit to the town on Tuesday in connection with investigation of the complaint about an alleged lock-up death case.

On Monday afternoon, a CID team, led by CID Superintendent of Police Divya Sarah Thomas, had reached Laxmeshwar and had begun investigation of the complaint about the alleged lock-up death of truck driver Shivanand Goni (23).

On Tuesday, Ms. Narang visited Laxmeshwar town and spoke to the police officials. She then visited Battur village and collected information from the family members of the deceased truck driver.

Speaking to presspersons, Ms. Narang said that the investigation of the case and the violence was under progress, and statements were being recorded.

While the police officials have clarified that the deceased was never taken into police custody and brought to the police station, the parents of the truck driver have alleged that their son died after being tortured by the police at the station.

In the wake of the allegation and the violence, Police Sub Inspector N. Devanand attached to Laxmeshwar Police Station and police driver Ashok Pujar have been suspended.

Meanwhile, the former Minister C.C. Patil met the family members of the deceased in Battur village of Shirahatti taluk and demanded an impartial inquiry into the incident.
