Mysuru will say Happy New Year with fireworks display at palace

Deputy Commissioner says they are testing the waters to assess public reaction

December 31, 2016 12:09 am | Updated 12:09 am IST - MYSURU:

Fireworks will not only light up the iconic Sydney Harbour at the stroke of midnight in the new year. Closer home, Mysureans and tourists will for the first time witness fireworks near the Mysuru palace. With this, the palace joins other monuments in the world that mark the new year with a fireworks display.

Deputy Commissioner D. Randeep told The Hindu that the display is being taken up on an experimental basis.

“We are testing the waters to asses the public reaction,” said Mr. Randeep, who said that no high-decibel crackers will be used. The fireworks will start at midnight and will last for five minutes.

The Deputy Commissioner also felt that the images when shared on social media and television networks would promote the brand of Mysuru. If the experiment is a successful one, the administration might take it forward and improvise on it in the coming years.

There are also other programmes to ring in the New Year on the palace premises.

On Saturday, a flower show at the palace will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 12.15 p.m., while a music programme has been organised from 8 p.m to 10 p.m. featuring M.D. Pallavi and party in front of the Kote Anjaneyaswamy temple.

The famed Police Band of Mysuru will regale the public from 10.30 p.m. to midnight, following which the fireworks will begin to ring in the new year

The palace will also be illuminated from midnight to 12.15 a.m. to mark the new year.
