The Lokayukta Superintendent of Police, Mysuru, and his car driver were killed in a road accident on Mysuru Road near Kumbalagod on Wednesday night.

The deceased were identified as Ravi Kumar, a 2008 batch Karnataka State Police officer hailing from Doddaballapur who was promoted as Superintendent of Police recently, and his driver Kiran Kumar, a CAR constable hailing from Hassan. Ravi Kumar had become a father a week ago, said senior police officials.

Ravi Kumar had come to Bengaluru on Wednesday for a meeting at the Karnataka Lokayukta office and was returning to Mysuru when the accident occurred.

Lakshmi Ganesh, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ramanagaram, said the driver of a tipper lorry coming from Mysuru towards Bengaluru lost control of the vehicle, crossed the median and collided head-on with the police officer’s car.

While Kiran Kumar was killed on the spot, passers-by rescued Ravi Kumar from the mangled metal of the car and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries a few minutes later, according to the police.

The tipper lorry driver abandoned the vehicle and fled from the spot.

The accident on the highway led to traffic jam for nearly an hour.
