The Koram/ Korava Samaj Hitabhivrudhi Sangha has opposed the implementation of the recommendations of the Sadashiva Commission report on internal reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes communities.
Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, sangha secretary Yamnur Gudihal said that the commission’s report was erroneous and if implemented, it would do more harm to Scheduled Castes communities than protecting their interests. Therefore, the government should reject it, he said.
The Koram or Korava community continued to be backward and marginalised in terms of social and economic conditions.
Poor representation
It was deprived of proper political representation. Of the nearly 13 lakh population of this community, no one has so far been elected to the legislature or Parliament. Their educational level too remained low and one could hardly see any member of this community in the higher positions of administration.
Menial jobs
Till this day, a large section of this community lives doing menial jobs such as making bamboo baskets, pig rearing, playing musical instruments and others.
However, the Sadashiva Commission report has recommended for revoking Scheduled Castes status for this community.
Unexplained
The commission has not explained on what grounds it had made this recommendation. It has not replied to queries in this regard.
The commission was formed in 2005 but it did not function till 2010 as the government had not provided grants and other facilities. Later, it prepared a report in a hurry without doing any ground work.
The entire report is prejudiced, unscientific and against the aspirations of the Constitution. It seems to have been prepared to keep one particular Scheduled Castes community in good humour, he said.
The sangha would also urge the government to announce the formation of a development board for the Koram/Korava community in the forthcoming budget, he said
Protest
The members of Koram/Korava community along with 99 other Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes communities, which are opposing the implementation of the Sadashiva Commission report, would organise a protest rally here on on January 9 to bring pressure to bear on the government to reject the report.
The protest rally would begin from the settlement area and conclude near the Ambedkar statue, where a public meeting would be held. Later, a memorandum would be submitted to the State government through the tahsildar’s office, Mr. Gudihal added.
Sangha president M.K. Gokak and others were present.
