Industries Department to tighten land allotment criteria

January 11, 2017 11:52 pm | Updated 11:52 pm IST - Mysuru:

The Industries Department will not provide lands in industrial areas for establishing educational institutions and choultries hereafter; it will only allot them to industrial entrepreneurs . However, institutions that provide skill and industrial training will be allotted land if requested.

The department will keep a watch on entrepreneurs who get lands in industrial areas for setting up industries, to ensure than they are used only for industrial purposes and not for any commercial, domestic or real estate business.

H. Ramakrishne Gowda, Joint Director of the District Industries Centre, told The Hindu that while sanctioning lands an undertaking would be taken from entrepreneurs that they would not use it for non-industrial purposes, including educational institutions and choultries. Industries should supplement other industries, particularly the small-scale ones, besides providing employment to a lot of people, he said.

Mr. Gowda said the decision was taken at a special meeting of top officials of the department a few days ago in Bengaluru. The department is also contemplating initiating action against those who availed land for industrial purposes but have been using it for other activities.

There were barely any takers for lands and the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board had to struggle to impress upon people to buy land in industrial layouts a couple of decades ago. But things have changed now and a lot of people are coming forward to buy land in industrial lay outs, a KIADB source said.

A few colleges and many choultries are established in industrial layouts on the outskirts of the city. Bars and restaurants too are established in industrial layouts.
