GP workers seek wage revision

Gram panchayat workers, serving on a daily wage basis at different villages in the district, took out a protest here on Monday to urge the State government to fulfil their long-pending demands.

The protest was organised under the aegis of the Karnataka State Gram Panchayat Workers’ Association and the Centre for Indian Trade Union (CITU). The workers took out the rally from Silver Jubilee Park of the Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway to the office of the Deputy Commissioner where they staged a demonstration for a while.

The government was urged to provide minimum wages and other benefits as published in the Labour Department’s official gazette a few months ago.

Prompt salary

The protesters also urged the government to pay Rs. 10,588 a month to pump operators (valve men) serving on daily wage basis, Rs. 12,870 to sweepers, Rs. 10,010 to peons, Rs. 12,122 to tax collectors and Rs. 12,520 to VDAs. They also requested the government to regularise the services of all those working in gram panchayat offices and release their payment before the fifth of every month.

G. Ramakrishna, Gejjalagere Ramu, Modur Nagaraj, S.K. Ananda, H.K. Venkatesh, Basavaraj, Mahadevu, Devaraj, H.M. Puttegowda, Shivananje Gowda, M.M. Shivakumar, Siddaramu and others took part in the protest.
