Five arrested; four pistols, five live rounds seized

The Kalaburagi police arrested five persons and seized four country-made pistols and five live rounds near Halyal in Afzalpur taluk in the district on Tuesday.

The accused, Saifansab Shiroor, Pandit Banshetty, Saifansab Bhagwan, Mallikarjun Hosamani and Shivukumar Huli from Afzalpur taluk were arrested under Indian Arms Act.

Superintendent of Police N. Shashi Kumar told presspersons here on Thursday said that Saifansab Shiroor had sold the weapons at a cost of ₹ 25,000 apiece to the four accused.

On interrogating the main accused Saifansab, he revealed that his accomplice Tanvan Singh, who supplied him the weapons, was from Madhya Pradesh.

Investigation is under way to find their local contacts and who they were delivering the weapons to.

He added that the police were gathering information to curb illegal weapons racket in the district.

To a question, Mr. Shashi Kumar said that the firearms would be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory to ascertain whether they were used in any crime in the past.

In the last three years, the police have cracked 15 such cases in the district, arrested 36 persons and seized 23 country-made pistols along with 21 live rounds from them, Mr. Shashi Kumar said.
