Kendra Sahitya Akademi award-winning writer Kum Veerabhadrappa has blamed elected representatives and politicians of Raichur district for their lack of interest in getting the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) here.

He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a cultural event organised by Kala Sankula to mark its fifth anniversary at the Siddarama Jambaladinni Ranga Mandir here on Sunday.

He said that elected representatives and politicians had failed to bring pressure to bear on the governments concerned to meet the demands of the people who fought for the institution, in the final stages. But, ultimately, someone had benefited.

Therefore, those who are vested with the responsibility of developing the district should join hands together to sanction any new projects that will take the district on the path of improvement, he advised.

While recalling history of the district, the writer said that Raichur had faced many attacks from the Bahmani sultans and the Nizam. However, harmony in society had not been damaged by such attacks and people are living in peace and with a sense of brotherhood.

Demonetisation

Mr. Veerabhadrappa, who is known for his sharp reaction to happenings around, said that the note ban decision taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had created confusion among the public and corrupt officials were indulging in illegal note exchanging. Therefore, the government should punish those responsible for this and solve the problems that cropped up after the note ban, he added.

Basavanagowda Byagwat, senior BJP leader, spoke.

Trivikram Joshi, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, P.M. Salimath, Vice-Chancellor of Agriculture University, Raichur, Basavaprabhu Patil, president of Kannada Sahitya Parishat, and Savitri Purushottam were felicitated with the award, Person of the Year.

Apart from this, Karnataka Samaj Sevaratna, Karnataka Vaidya Ratna, Karnataka Sahakara Ratna, Karnataka Ratnasri and Jananayak Awards were given away to those who had made achievements in different fields.

Manohar Pattar, senior psychiatrist, Rekha Badiger, chairperson of Kala Sankula, H. Jagadish, K.M. Patil and others were present.
