The Karnataka Pradesh Youth Congress Committee on Wednesday filed a complaint against the BJP MP for Mysuru, Pratap Simha, for allegedly calling Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur anti-national and likening her to Dawood Ibrahim on social media.

Ms. Kaur’s online ‘Save DU’ campaign against the violence on campuses, which she has since ended, had caused a country-wide stir, with many abusing her on social media for her stand. After the controversy over his post, Mr. Simha clarified that he had “simply” reposted a Facebook post. In a complaint to the police, committee general secretary Umesh Bore Gowda alleged that the statements made by the MP were insensitive and against the democratic principles of freedom of expression.

“His statements are an insult to martyrs. This gives a wrong message to the youth in the country,” he said, and demanded action against Mr. Simha. The High Grounds police have taken up the complaint, but have not registered an FIR. “We have sent it to the legal cell for an opinion, based on which action will be taken,” said a senior police officer.
