A 21-year-old college student, who was facing a police complaint on charges of being involved in an assault on the campus, reportedly committed suicide by hanging in Sringeri town on Tuesday night. Abhishek was a final year B.Com student of JCBM College in Sringeri.
He left a note appealing to his father to forgive him for having a police complaint filed against him, according to the police. The family members found him dead and informed the Sringeri police, who later registered an unnatural death report. Abhishek was associated with Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat. He and four other ABVP members – Arjun D.J., Anirudha, Kartik and Kaushik – all students of the same college, had allegedly assaulted K.P. Anjan, a member of National Students Union of India, on Monday. Following this incident, Anjan had filed a complaint with the police.
The police said the case was filed under sections related to criminal intimidation and causing a riot on the campus. However, none of the accused students were summoned or enquired related to the complaint. The student was reportedly upset after the complaint was filed with the police.
Background
The ABVP and NSUI units of the college had differences over inviting Chakravarthi Sulibele, a founder of Yuva Brigade, to deliver a talk on the sacrifice of soldiers, on January 7. The members of NSUI had opposed the participation of Sulibele in the programme, accusing him of being communal and supporter of a murder accused in RTI activist Baliga case in Mangaluru. Sulibele did not attend the programme. Both the groups had a heated debate on the issue. According to Anjan, he was assaulted by Abhishek and others on the college campus on January 9. The same day he had filed the case with Sringeri police.
