Bird found dead at Kukkarahalli lake exhumed and sent for testing

January 11, 2017 11:58 pm | Updated 11:58 pm IST - MYSURU:

The carcass of a cattle egret, which was buried on the precincts of Kukkarahalli lake by workers after it was found dead on the lake bunds on Tuesday, was exhumed on Wednesday and sent to the Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals (IAH and VB), Bengaluru, to confirm cause of death.

The results are expected on Thursday.

Prasad Murthy, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry, Mysuru, said the bird was unknowingly buried by workers employed at the lake though the protocol (in the wake of bird flu deaths in Mysuru zoo) is to report the matter to the veterinary department.

“Preliminary tests are usually done at IAH and VB. If the samples test positive, the Bhopal lab will be approached for confirmation,” he said.

Dr. Murthy made an appeal to the people not to bury or touch dead birds and to report the matter either to his department or bring the carcass to the veterinary hospital on Dhanwanrti Road, Mysuru.
