Organization for Bidar Transformation (ORBIT ), a Bidar-based NGO, will develop 8 to 10 model villages across the district to mark its silver jubilee celebrations.
ORBIT has taken up welfare and development works in the district in the last two and a half decades. It has also undertaken watershed development, formation of women’s self help groups, identifying out of school children and sending them back to school, providing vocational education to boys and girls, and sheltering destitute women.
“The next phase is creating model villages by focusing all such activities in selected villages,” said Anil Chrasta, director designate of the NGO. The NGO, started in 1993, will complete 25 years of service in 2018. Various activities will be organise to coincide with it.
ORBIT has promoted SHGs, but has never been a lender. Farmers in around 180 hectares have benefited due to the rejuvenation or creation of tanks and watershed development activities.
It has organised around 600 physically challenged persons into associations in the district. Around 2000 physically challenged persons have got government benefits due to its facilitators. The State government has awarded efforts of Sparsha, a rehabilitation centre for HIV/AIDS affected children in Basava Kalyan.
Don Bosco has rescued child labourers and child brides through its helpline.
The Catholic Diocese of Kalaburgi oversees the functions of these institutions, Fr Chrasta said.
