BJP leader and four-time MLA for Kagwad, Bharamagouda alias Raju Kage, and his family members are facing the charge of attacking and attempting to murder Youth Congress worker Vivek Shetty.

He was allegedly attacked for sending obscene and threat messages to a few women in Mr. Kage’s family, besides posting on Facebook. The assault, which was carried out on January 1, came to light on Monday. Mr. Vivek Shetty is undergoing treatment for multiple fractures and injuries at a private hospital at Miraj in Maharashtra.

This comes close on the heels of BJP MP for Uttara Kannada, Ananthkumar Hegde, allegedly assaulting doctors at a private hospital in Sirsi. Sub-Inspector Anand Doni confirmed that Mr. Shetty had filed a complaint against Mr. Kage, his wife, daughter, brother, and eight others, and a FIR was registered under Section 307 of IPC.

Speaking to The Hindu , Jayendra Shetty, Mr. Vivek Shetty’ father, alleged that around 8.45 a.m. on January 1, a group armed with a sickle and club, led by Shobha Kage, Sidgonda Kage and Trupti Kage, wife, brother and daugher of Mr. Kage, barged into their house in Ugar of Athani taluk, and hit Mr. Vivek Shetty.

He alleged that his wife Ujwala Shetty was also manhandled. Later, they dragged Mr. Vivek Shetty and took him to a automobile shed at Mr. Kage’s house in Ugar, where he was allegedly beaten up by the MLA and others.

Later, he was shifted to the hospital, where the doctors performed a major surgery and inserted a 10 inch-long rod to treat a major fracture on his left thigh, Mr. Jayendra Shetty said.

On the allegation of sending obscene messages, Mr. Jayendra Shetty said: “They are spreading rumours. Let them produce the messages before the police.” Mr. Vivek Shetty was the former Chikodi Taluk BJP Yuva Morcha president and joined the Congress a year ago, he said.

Reacting to the allegations, Mr. Kage said: “I don’t know anything about the incident, and learnt about it only through TV reports on Monday.”
