In a surprise move, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the class 10 results late on Sunday evening.
Karnataka has performed well with 99.90 per cent of students who appeared for the examination being declared passed as against the Chennai region’s overall score of 99.87 per cent.
In Karnataka, girls scored 99.97 per cent while boys recorded 99.86 per cent.
The board was under mounting pressure to declare the results as admissions to pre-university colleges in the State had already begun after the SSLC results were announced on May 6 and ICSE results on May 17.
Karnataka has 398 schools affiliated to CBSE, which includes 35 Kendriya Vidyalaya schools, 27 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, 331 private schools, and 5 Tibet schools.
The board, which gave no hint about the announcement of the results, released the results only of the Chennai region (6 States and 4 Union Territories), which recorded a pass percentage of 99.87, as 1,74,752 of the 1,74,965 students who appeared for the exam have qualified for the next grade.
Speaking to The Hindu over telephone, T. Sudharashan Rao, Regional Officer, CBSE Chennai Region, said: “The results of the region have been announced now to facilitate students to get admission to higher classes as soon as possible.” Mr. Rao said that the performance of the Chennai region had improved over last year’s as there was an improvement in the pass percentage.
Unlike other boards, the CBSE students’ performance has a Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) that takes into account the students scholastic and cocurricular performance in Class IX and Class X.
While most schools in the city were elated with good grades and pass percentages, several schools were yet to calculate the results at the time of going to press.

Some of the students who were on cloud nine were those who secured the perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) score of 10. One such student was Y.V. Chandana of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Malleswaram here, who was not even aware that the results would be announced on Sunday.
“My friends called me to tell about the results… and I was surprised.”
However, she later admitted that she had expected a CGPA of 10. “It feels very good. Months of staying glued to textbooks, reference books and question papers have finally paid off,” she said, adding that she wants to pursue PCMB in the same institution. Another student part of the CGPA 10 score club was Sanjana Suryaprakash from Delhi Public School, South said: “My teachers have been my main support system. In fact, the only reason why I have done so well is because I was very attentive in the class.”
Candidates who wish to apply for verification of marks can do so within 21 days of the declaration of results. Those students who wish to apply for improvement of performance can do so in the prescribed form before June 21.The tentative date of this examination is July 16.
