Nine persons were killed in three accidents in Tumakuru and Chikkamagaluru districts.
Five persons, including three women from Raichur district, were killed and five seriously injured when a lorry rammed their vehicle on National Highway 48 near Chikkanahalli in Sira taluk of the district on Sunday.
The police identified the dead as Anjanamma (25), native of Ankalakompe in Deodurg taluk, Lakshmi (22) and Mariamma (55), both from Hirebadaradinni in Manvi taluk, and Bheemanna alias Poojari (35) and Basavaraju (32) from Deodurg taluk. The injured are Venkatesh (35) from Andhra Pradesh, Ambarish (6), Sharif (18) from Devadurga taluk, and Haralaiah (55) from Manvi taluk.
Construction workersAll of them are construction workers in Bengaluru. They had gone to their native places 15 days ago and were returning to Bengaluru.
As one of the tyres had a puncture, the driver of their vehicle stopped it near the roadside and the process of changing the tyre was on when a lorry rammed their vehicle.
Three of them died on the spot and the others in hospital.
The lorry driver, Kanakaraj, and the other injured are being treated at the district government hospital.
A case has been registered at the Kallambella police station.
Second accidentTwo persons were killed on the spot while they were crossing the National Highway 48 near Kamat Hotel in a hit-and-run case in Sira taluk on Saturday night.
The police identified the dead as Kumar (25) of Gollahalli in Sira taluk and Manjunath (23) of Oduguntepalya in the same taluk.
A bus belonging to a private transport company hit them while they were crossing the road and sped away. But the Kallambella police traced the bus near Bankapur in Haveri district and arrested the driver.
A case has been registered at the Kallambella police station.
Two girls dieTwo tenth standard students died on the spot when a tipper-lorry hit their two-wheeler near Lakya Cross in Chikkamagaluru on Sunday. The police gave the names of the dead as Nithya (16) and Sahana (16), residents of Sadarahalli in Lakya hobli of Chikkamagaluru taluk. Both were students of Sanjeevini School in the town. The Chikkamagaluru Rural police have registered a complaint.
