The Srinivaspur taluk unit of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) has selected a freedom fighter to preside over the third taluk-level conference of the organisation. P. Ramappa Naidu (86) has been given a rare honour to represent Kannadigas.
Though not a literary figure, the KSP taluk unit chose Mr. Naidu taking into consideration the octogenarian’s contribution in spreading and preserving Kannada culture in the border area through singing. The conference is scheduled for June 15.
During the freedom movement, Mr. Naidu used to clandestinely visit villages in the night and sing patriotic songs inspiring people to participate in the struggle.
It was Mr. Naidu who took stalwart freedom fighters such as K. Pattabhiraman, Hardekar Manjappa, K.C. Reddy and Kengal Hanumanthaiya to Rayalpadu where a large number of people joined the movement.
Mr. Naidu was one among those who participated in an attack on Rayalpadu police station in 1947 and suffered severe punishment at the hands of the British. He was released from jail only after country attained Independence.
A farmer by profession, Mr. Naidu engaged himself in several social and cultural activities in the region promoting Gandhian values.
Undeterred by the arrest of Mr. Naidu, a staunch patriotic, Subbamma, who was betrothed to him, remained steadfast saying she will only marry him, after his release.
Ace film director P.R. Ramadas Naidu is one among the seven siblings of Mr. Naidu.
“We feel proud to have the veteran freedom fighter who is serving the cause of Kannada through music and songs as the president of the taluk sahitya sammelan,” said KSP taluk unit president Munivenkata Gowda.
