As many as 70 activists of Bharatiya Janata Party and Bajrang Dal who had tried to stage a protest on Friday in violation of the prohibitory orders in Sagar city were detained by the police. They were trying to protest against the celebration of Tipu Jayanti as a State-sponsored programme.

The district administration had clamped prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in Shivamogga, Sagar and Bhadravati on Friday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. to maintain peace during Tipu Jayanti.

When the BJP and Bajrang Dal activists gathered near old police station in Sagar city to stage a protest, the police immediately swung into action and arrested them.

The activists were released later. Meanwhile, Tipu Jayanti was observed peacefully in Shivamogga and Bhadravathi cities.
