Seven pilgrims hailing from Karnataka were killed and four injured when the vehicle they were travelling in rammed into a lorry in Kurnool district, police said on Monday.

The incident occurred at Peddapadu bridge near Kurnool at around Sunday midnight, they said.

Five persons died on the spot and two others succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Kurnool town, Kurnool district Superintendent of Police, Ch Srikanth told PTI over phone.

He said the four-wheeler was being driven rashly and it may have led to the mishap. The victims included five women, he added.

Fifteen persons from Raichur district of Karnataka were travelling in the four-wheeler. They were going to Srisailam temple to worship Mallikarjunaswamy and participate in special rituals during Ugadi festival, police said.

The injured were shifted to nearby hospital, police said, adding further investigations were on.
