At least 50,000 children, studying in classes I to VIII in government and aided schools, in drought-hit Mandya district will get midday meals even during the summer vacation.
All seven taluks in the district are reeling under severe drought for the third continuous year. Therefore, the State government has decided to extend the ‘Akshara Dasoha’ to help the students.
As many as 50,221 students have shown enthusiasm to get the benefits of mid-day meals during the summer vacation, between April 11 and May 28, M. Shivamadappa, Deputy Director of Public Instruction, told The Hindu here on Wednesday. The department will provide midday meals even on Sundays and other government holidays.
The number of students studying in classes I to VIII in government and aided schools in the district is 1.48 lakh.
While the head teachers get earned leaves (ELs) from April 11 to May 28, Akshara Dasoha workers will receive salary for their work.
The Department of Food and Civil Supplies has agreed to supply required number of LPG cylinders to the schools.
