A total of 3.37 lakh personnel who are in the Defence forces and those deployed for the polling duty will exercise their franchise though postal ballot.
Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Chief Electoral Officer Anil Kumar Jha said three lakh police and government employees, who will be deployed for election duty, and 37,000 personnel serving in Defence forces would cast their votes though postal ballot.
He said the Election Commission has decided to enter into an agreement with the Postal Department to provide an opportunity to Defence and polling personnel to cast their vote.
Two envelopes would be posted to the Defence personnel from the State. One envelop includes a ballot paper for casting the vote while other for posting certificates of unit officers of Defence forces stating that the person was serving in the unit.
Ballot papers would be given to three lakh personnel roped in for the election duty during the training period to be held soon. Training would be in three different days held for police and the government employees involved in the election purpose. A total of 50,000 booths would be set up for voting on May 5 and each booth would be manned by five personnel. Besides polling officials, ballot papers would also be given to drivers and cleaners of buses and other vehicles, he said.
Ballot papers would be sent to the Defence personnel from Karnataka after April 20, the last day for withdrawal of papers. The Returning Officers of respective constituencies would despatch ballot papers to the Defence personnel from April 22, the CEO said.
Stopped
The Commission has directed the State Legislative Assembly secretariat to stop recruitment process for appointment of personnel for various posts.
The secretariat commenced the recruitment process on Thursday but stopped later, the CEO said.
