The Medical Council of India (MCI) has given its approval for admissions to 300 more medical seats in the State.

Minister of State for Medical Education Sharanprakash Patil told The Hindu from New Delhi on Saturday that admissions had been approved for 100 seats each in the ESIC Medical College in Bangalore and Gulbarga, and 50 enhanced seats each in the Mysore Medical College and Research Institute and the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences in Bellary for the current academic year.

Recently, the MCI had given its nod for admissions to 100 enhanced seats in the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute and 50 enhanced seats in the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences, Hubli.

Dr. Patil is in New Delhi along with senior officials of the Medical Education Department to meet Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and submit the compliance report to the MCI seeking approval for admissions to 150 seats each in the six new government medical colleges proposed in Gulbarga, Koppal, Chamarajanagar, Gadag, Karwar and Kodagu.

“I am hopeful that the MCI’s Executive Committee will consider the State’s plea and the compliance report and allow the admissions in the six colleges,” Dr. Patil said.

He said allowing intake in the six new colleges would help meritorious students with poor economic background.
