Around 2,500 police personnel working at the district and taluk headquarters of the six districts of Hyderabad Karnataka have received mobile phones under the ‘Namma Police’ project, said Minister for Municipal Administration and Minority Affairs Qamarul Islam.

Inaugurating the Namma Police project on Thursday, Mr. Islam said there was a need to bridge the gap between the police and the public. In a bid to make the police department more effective and people-friendly, the Hyderabad Karnataka Region Development Board (HKRDB) launched the Namma Police project.

He said 50 police stations, including 14 in Kalaburagi, 13 in Ballari, eight each in Bidar and Raichur, four in Koppal and three in Yadgir were provided with mobile phones. The project would be extended to all the 161 police stations in the 31 taluks of the Hyderabad-Karnataka region very soon, Mr. Qamarul said.

Inspector General of Police (North Eastern Range) Sunil Agrawal, in his address, said the main objective of the project was to create a people-friendly police team. Each community police officer will be in direct contact with 200 families in each locality. The contact number of the respective area police personnel would be provided to all the residents.

Around 5 lakh families would be in contact with the police personnel under phase I of the project, he added. Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge distributed mobile phones to the police personnel on the occasion.
