20 fall ill after drinking contaminated water

As many as 20 persons have fallen ill after drinking contaminated water in Bhadrapur village in Sorab taluk. The village, with a population of around 500, has only an open well as its only source of drinking water.

On Sunday morning, the residents complained of vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach ache. Of the 20 persons who fell ill, 14 persons were admitted to Primary Health Centre(PHC) in nearby Ulavi village and three were treated at General Hospital in Sorab town.

Taluk Health Officer Satish told The Hindu that, the condition of all the 17 persons who were hospitalised was stable now. He said that the 14 persons who were admitted to the PHC in Ulavi has been discharged.

A medical team is camping in the affected village. He said that, ample stock of medicines has been maintained at the PHC in Ulavi.

He said that, the residents of the village have been directed not to drink the water from the open well. The sample of the water has been sent to laboratory for test.

The gram panchayat has been asked to take measures to disinfect the water in the open well. After the incident, the water is being supplied to the residents of the village through tankers.

The residents of the village have been asked to boil the water before drinking.

In wake of this incident, Madhu Bangarappa, Sorab MLA, has directed the taluk administration to immediately dig a borewell in Bhadrapur to ensure regular supply of drinking water here.
