A doctor from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh has filed a cheating complaint against nine persons, including three kindergarten teachers, for duping him of Rs. 95 lakh after promising a postgraduate seat at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Medical College here.
But this is not a stray case. Dr. Sudhir Kumar B. is one among the 19 doctors, who have paid a total Rs. 15 crore to touts, who promised them seats in reputed medical colleges in the city over the past six months.
In a complaint filed with the Devarajeevanahalli police a few days ago, Dr. Sudhir said he wanted to pursue a postgraduate course and approached, through his friends, three kindergarten teachers, who were also running a consultancy firm called Strategic Resources at Prahalapura in Andhra Pradesh.
The trio identified as Jyothi, Vasupalli Lalitha and Reena promised him a seat at Dr. Ambedkar Medical College and charged Rs. 50,000 as consultation fee to direct him to their contact in Bangalore, identified as Sanjay Paul.
In January last year, Paul introduced him to Chetan Nagayya and Dr. Kumar, who introduced themselves as board members of the college and promised to get him a seat. Overwhelmed by the response, Dr. Sudhir paid Rs. 10 lakh as processing fee and a few months later, they asked him to pay the full and final amount as his admission process was on. The accused went missing soon after Dr. Sudhir paid the full amount. After realising that he had been duped, Dr. Sudhir approached senior police officers who directed him to file a complaint.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Abhishek Goel, who is supervising the investigation, said, “We are investigating these cases to ascertain if the accused are part of the COMEDK seat-blocking racket.”
