181 students take part in chess tournament in Shivamogga

The Hindu in School Chess Competition, a chess tournament for children at C. Bheemasena Rao (CBR) National College of Law here on Sunday witnessed good participation, with 181 students turning up to take part.

The event was held under the aegis of The Hindu and Shivamogga District Chess Association. Well-known chess player and coach Srikrishna Udupa who inaugurated the programme said that practising chess will help children achieve a high degree of concentration and enhance their confidence too. Young players should upgrade their skills by practising regularly, he said.

Nagaraja R., Chief Administrative Coordinator, PES Institute of Technology and Management, who was the chief guest for the valedictory ceremony, called upon parents to motivate their children to participate in sports and cultural activities. Participation in extra-curricular activities was necessary for comprehensive development of their personality, he said.

Raja Nayak, Registrar of Evaluation, Kuvempu University, gave away the prizes. Surendra Shetty, Assistant Manager (Circulation), The Hindu was present. The chief sponsor of the event was Thyrocare. Arrow Publications was the knowledge partner, Corporation Bank was the regional partner, while C. Bheemasena Rao (CBR) National College of Law was the venue partner.

The list of winners is as follows: Girls under-13: Spandana M. Raikar (first); Ananya K.R. (second); Annapoorna S., Hiba K., Vaishnavi K. and Sinchana H.R.(consolation prizes). Girls under-11: Mridhini M.R. (first); Moola Greeshma(second); Simret Kotian, Amrutha S., Amrutha A. and Aswitha (consolation prizes). Girls under-9: Amrutha Vaidya(first); Sanjana S. (second); Navyashree R., Pruthvi Nayak B.K., Bhooshira K.A. and Savitha Santhosh Sarang(consolation prizes). Girls under-15: Chithkala Bhat (first); Patki Varudhini Sadananda (second) and Nayana V.S.(third).

Boys under-9: Mithravind K.P. (first); Ashmith A. (second); Nithin Kashyap (third); Chayendra H.R., Yashas Pawar, Shagun Jambur, Shreyas J.S., Shreyas S., Vilas Andrade and Vineeth Patel (consolation prizes). Boys under-11: Shreyas V. (first); Varad Kubsad (second); Adithya Shekar (third); Smaran Nayak, Amith Shastry, Dhamush Gowda, Rohith R., Prajwal Prabhu, Tejaswi Teggihalli and Sanath V.P. (consolation prizes).
