As many as 16 villages in Mysuru district have been facing water scarcity for over a month now. People trekking long distances to fetch a pail of water is a common sight as even the borewells in these hamlets have gone dry. But the Mysuru Zilla Panchayat authorities claimed that each of those villages was being supplied the required quantity of water through tankers.
Among the villages that are facing acute water shortage are Jattihundi, Ramanahundi, Mooganahundi, Anagalli, Sahukarhundi, Maatikyathanahalli, Shattanayakanahalli, Berihundi in Mysuru taluk; Kalegowdanakoppalu, Dasarakoppalu, Kalmandi and Modalu villages of Hunsur taluk; and Kakkanahatti, Karyapura, Hanumappanahundi and Gattipura in Nanjangud taluk.
People of these villages said that they are not surprised that there is water scarcity this summer also. They blame successive governments for not providing permanent water project for their villages.
Speaking to The Hindu , Chief Executive Officer of the Mysuru Zilla Panchayat P.A. Gopal said that the zilla panchayat was supplying water through tankers to the 16 villages, and the engineering division of the ZP was making efforts to repair borewells, and sink new borewells after consultation with geologists. Each MLA has been allocated a sum of Rs. 47 lakh by the State government, and that can be released for addressing water scarcity, he said.
Meanwhile the ZP has sent a proposal to the government to provide river water to villages of Hunsur, Nanjangud and Mysuru taluks, he said.
