As many as 11 gastroenteritis cases were reported in Byalahalli village in Bidar district on Wednesday.
Two of the patients were shifted to the district hospital and eight are being treated in the village hospital.
The family of one patient, however, shifted the patient to Hyderabad on the advice of a registered medical practitioner, according to Health Department officials.
An ambulance has been stationed in the village. A team of doctors visited the families and advised them to use clean water, District Health and Family Welfare Officer M.A. Jabbar said.
There has been a number of water-borne diseases reported in Bidar in the recent past. The number of affected persons has been put at 1,800 in six months. However, there has been only one death, suspected to be caused by cholera.
“We are viewing this as a challenge,” said Anurag Tewari, Deputy Commissioner. He said that treating patients, stopping the spread of infection and providing clean water are priorities now. According to him, a long-term plan is being implemented by the zilla panchayat to ensure clean water for every habitation and make villages open defecation-free.
