A total of 1,064 persons travelling in both KSRTC and private buses have died in road accidents between 2011 and 2013.

In a reply to Eshwar Bheemanna Khandre (Congress) in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, Transport Minister R. Ramalinga Reddy said 330 persons travelling in private buses died in 1,512 accidents in 2011, 379 have died in 1,511 accidents in 2012, and 351 persons have died in 1,340 accidents in 2013 (till date).

A total of 575 commuters in KSRTC buses have died in 2,011 accidents in 2011, 714 persons died in 2,001 accidents in 2012, and 713 commuters have been killed in 1,839 mishaps in 2013 (till date). The government had already announced a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh each to eight persons in the Haveri bus accident.

He said the State government has asked National Automative Testing and Research & Development Infrastructure Project (NATRiP), New Delhi to analyse the recent bus accident in Haveri district, and to submit a detailed report to take remedial steps. A team of officials from the agency had inspected the accident spot on November 11 and collected evidence.

The government would take necessary steps after receiving a full report. Between October 31 and December 3, 2013, RTO officials had inspected 17,820 private buses, booked 5,819 cases for violations, seized 282 vehicles, and collected a fine of Rs 1.81 crore.
