May 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:53 am IST - RAICHUR:

Of the 11,314 candidates who filed nominations for contesting 3,458 seats in 174 gram panchayats in the district, 10,321 are in the fray after rejections and withdrawals of nominations.

Addressing a press conference at his office on Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer S. Sasikanth Senthil said that 93 nominations were rejected and 400 nominations were withdrawn.

As per the details provided by Mr. Senthil, the maximum number of nominations were filed in Manvi taluk (2,684 for 744 seats in 38 GPs) followed by Lingasugur (2,312 for 744 seats in 39 GPs), Sindhanur (2,298 for 724 seats in 35 GPs), Raichur (2,221 for 632 seats in 31 GPs) and Deodurg (1,799 for 614 seats in 31 GPs).

The maximum number of nominations were rejected in Lingasugur taluk (40) followed by Sindhanur (31), Deodurg (14), Manvi (6) and Raichur (2).

Elected uncontested

The officer said that 500 candidates were elected uncontested in the district with Sindhanur taluk topping with 157 followed by Lingasugur (114), Manvi (88), Raichur (72) and Deodurg (69). For the fifth time in a row, all 28 members in Tidigola Gram Panchayat were elected unopposed.

Boycott

Mr. Senthil said that no nominations were filed for 97 seats in Lingasugur (52), Raichur (37) and Sindhanur (8) taluks. Since the demand for upgrading Hutti Gram Panchayat in Lingasugur taluk to town panchayat was not considered, no nomination was filed in protest.

A total of 6265 personnel have been appointed.

Mr. Senthil appealed the public to help the Election Commission in having a smooth and peaceful conduct of polls.
