The decks for setting up special courts for the trial of rape cases in the State have been cleared with the State government giving its nod for establishing 10 such courts in different districts where crimes against women are higher.

Disclosing this to presspersons in Bangalore on Wednesday, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T.B. Jayachandra said the government had given clearance for setting up special courts, appointment of judges and other staff to these courts besides providing necessary infrastructure.

Which districts?

Bangalore Urban district will have two special courts. The others will be set up at Bangalore Rural, Belgaum, Mangalore, Gulbarga, Madikeri, Mandya, Mysore and Ramanagaram districts.

In addition to the judge, each special court will have 36 staff members. This includes five first-division assistants, five second-division assistants and a stenographer. The Minister said financial allocation for setting up these courts had already been made in the revised State Budget. He said the government would soon amend the Act concerned to increase the number of government pleaders, assistant government pleaders and notaries. He had held a meeting with experts and officials of the Law Department on Tuesday, he said.
