She trembled as she tried to narrate the ordeal she had gone through on Saturday night. “He said he would drop me home, but the police appa spoilt me,” was all she managed to say.
The 32-year-old woman, who was raped in a moving vehicle allegedly by an assistant sub-inspector of police (ASI) on night rounds, was reluctant to meet strangers on Monday.
She has been undergoing tests at a hospital since Sunday. The police have been preventing anyone apart from the hospital staff and her family from speaking with her.
The expert committee on Prevention of Sexual Violence against Women and Children and the Karnataka State Commission for Women spoke to her on Monday afternoon.
Mentally challenged since birth, she has been undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, for the last two years.
‘He left in a hurry’
Narrating the ordeal that her daughter went through, the woman’s mother said: “She fought with me over a trivial issue and walked out around 7 p.m. on Saturday”. “She said she had walked around 6 km and visited two temples, and couldn’t find her way back home. That is when the policeman spotted her,” the distraught mother added.
Around 3.30 a.m. on Sunday morning, I saw a policeman drop off my daughter in a white-colour four-wheeler, she recounted.
“I repeatedly asked the policeman where he found her and what had happened to her, but he refused to answer and left in a hurry,” she said.
“Her condition had been improving as she was receiving treatment. But now, she is in shock and is not eating food properly. She starts to tremble as soon as she sees strangers in the absence of her family,” her brother said.
However, the family says they are not intimidated by the fact that the accused is a police officer, and are determined to fight for justice. “We are poor but we will fight for her till we get justice,” her mother said.
