The central committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has faulted the Narendra Modi government for bypassing Parliament and taking the ordinance route to increase foreign direct investment in the insurance sector by 49 per cent, opening up of the coal industry to private sector mining and diluting the Land Acquisition Act by adding amendments, taking away the right of farmers and land-owners.
“The ordinance route reveals the character of the Modi government,” General Secretary Prakash Karat told journalists here on Tuesday, after attending the second day’s session of the committee.
The committee has taken strong note of the ‘right-wing offensive’ unleashed by the Bharatiya Janata Party after assuming power at the Centre. At the same time Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-led Hindutva forces are also trying to advance their communal agenda, it said.
“Such a situation presages the threat of growing authoritarianism,” said the draft political resolution taken up by the committee.
Mr. Karat presented the draft resolution which is expected to be adopted on Wednesday, after discussion.
