Karan Thapar, the well-known television journalist, has won the International Press Institute (IPI) India Award for Excellence in Journalism.

In a press release, IPI's India Chapter said that a jury — chaired by former Chief Justice A.S. Anand — had chosen Mr. Thapar "for his sharp interviews on the Devil's Advocate programme on CNN IBN."

Mr. Thapar told The Hindu he was delighted to receive the award. "In television, you associate an interview with a face. But there is a full team behind the face and the show. I share this with my producer and researchers who provide the guidance, as well as the director and cameramen who make the programme appealing and watchable," he said.

In an earlier interview, Rajdeep Sardesai, the editor-in-chief of CNN-IBN, where Mr. Thapar’s shows are telecast, had compared Mr. Thapar to a "public prosecutor." "His eye for detail and intensive research puts him in a different league," Mr. Sardesai had said.

Previous winners of the IPI award include The Indian Express, NDTV, Outlook, Tehelka, Tribune and The Week.

Can't imagine how he got this award. Never allows anyone to talk. There's no
value for these awards then.

Where is our media heading to ? This man has only one single way of thinking. That is his way of thinking is right. this award is utter nonsense !

Let the award go to the entire team then. Why mention him singly unlike previous times when
instituitions were praised.

A well deserved award. He indeed is one of the sharpest, most
articulate and highly insightful minds in journalism. Today when an
interview has come to mean a program in which the interviewer
relentlessly shouts at the guest while the guest shouts back, The
Devil's Advocate stands out as a deeply enlightening interview show.
