On a day when the residents of Kamduni village in the State’s North 24 Parganas district left for New Delhi to meet the President Pranab Mukherjee to demand justice for the college student who was gang-raped and murdered recently, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reiterated that her government would continue its efforts to ensure justice to the victim.
A number of villagers including the deceased victim’s family members, who left for the capital on Saturday, said that they have no faith in the ongoing probe by the State’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and demanded that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) take over the investigation. The villagers are scheduled to meet the President on July 15 just four days before the district goes to polls.
The move by the Kamduni villagers has come as an embarrassment for Ms. Banerjee’s government. She said at an election rally that her government had filed a charge sheet within 22 days of the incident and would ensure that justice was delivered.
