The family of the late Chief Justice of India, Justice J.S. Verma, has declined to accept the Padma Bhushan conferred on him.In a letter to President Pranab Mukherjee, Justice Verma’s wife Pushpa Verma said she did not want to accept an award the late judge himself would not have received.

Ms. Verma wrote: “My late husband never hankered or lobbied for any acclaim, reward or favour.” Justice Verma would be remembered as one of India’s most pre-eminent jurists with a legacy of alleviating injustice by forging globally-acclaimed new legal tools, she said in her letter.
