Anu Mukherjee was 25 when she was a dancer in a bar. Fellow dancer Simran was jealous of the rising star with good looks.
One day, Simran, with her brother Raju alias Qayoom, threw acid on Anu. As her face and eyes were burnt, she lost her career. In January 2011, Simran and Qayoom were sentenced to five-year rigorous imprisonment.
Three months ago, Anu started a new life, thanks to Justice Kurian Joseph.
Ascertaining from advocate Aparna Bhat — who has been championing the cause of acid attack victims — that Anu was fit to be a junior court attendant, Justice Joseph offered her the job. She applied and was selected, Ms. Bhat said.
Anu is expected to complete a few formalities in the next few days before joining duty in the Supreme Court.
Talking to The Hindu , Justice Joseph said: “After coming to know about the plight of Anu Mukherjee, I enquired about her with Ms. Bhat. After I found her suitable for the post, the offer letter has been sent.”
