Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Saturday held a meeting with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in connection with the ongoing protests against the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) pattern.
“At the appropriate time, the government will share whatever the conclusions (on the issue) are,” said Mr. Singh, when asked about the government decision on the Varma Committee’s recommendations as regards the examination pattern. The three-member Committee, constituted in March, submitted its report to the government earlier this week.
A group of protesters earlier staged a demonstration outside the Home Minister’s residence.
Over the past few days, Parliament has been witnessing uproarious scenes on the issue. On Friday, the entire Opposition walked out of the Rajya Sabha and in protest, a member of the Lok Sabha tore up a newspaper and threw it towards the Speaker’s chair. The protesting MPs demanded a definite timeframe from the government to act upon the Committee’s report.
Stating that the report was being examined, the Home Minister said the government was committed to resolve the problem as soon as possible.
The government had last month urged the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to consider postponing the preliminary examination pending “clarity” over the syllabus and its pattern. However, the UPSC went ahead with the schedule issuing admit cards for the examination to be conducted on August 24. This sparked off a violent protest by the students who have been demanding that CSAT be scrapped as it discriminates against the candidates from Humanities and non-English background.
