Jharkhand heading for President's rule

Jharkhand appears to be heading for a spell of President's rule. Governor M.O.H. Farooq sent a report to the Centre on Monday, highlighting the political instability and lack of interest among parties to form an alternative government.

With Chief Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Shibu Soren resigning on Sunday night — his government was reduced to a minority after the Bharatiya Janata Party withdrew support to it — Jharkhand faces political instability yet again. Mr. Soren quit as he was not able to muster sufficient numbers ahead of a trust vote in the Assembly.

After exploring in vain the possibility of installing another government, Mr. Farooq sent his report to the Union Home Ministry. The Union Cabinet is likely to meet on Tuesday to consider the report and make a recommendation to the President for bringing Jharkhand under President's rule.

Official sources said that before sending his report, Mr. Farooq held discussions with political parties.

The Governor is said to have pointed out that in the prevailing political situation, and given the arithmetic in the Assembly, no party showed an interest in forming an alternative government.
