Jethmalani: likely source of money is BJP

September 13, 2011 12:16 am | Updated November 17, 2021 12:45 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Senior advocate Ram Jethmalani on Monday created a flutter in a special court here when he said the “likely” source of the money in the cash-for-votes scam that the three BJP MPs waved in Parliament on July 22, 2008, was the BJP.

Mr. Jethmalani was arguing on Rajya Sabha member Amar Singh's interim bail application.

“BJP leader L. K. Advani said he organised the sting operation. If the money was waved [in the Lok Sabha] by the BJP MPs, then the source of money is likely to be from the BJP. It is not alleged in the charge sheet that Amar Singh provided the money,” he said adding that he was not prejudicing anyone's case.

Mr. Jethmalani, who is also a BJP Rajya Sabha member, pointed to a bail application moved by Mr. Singh's former aide, Sanjeev Saxena, in which the latter alleges that the money he handed over to the three BJP MPs came from the BJP treasurer.

In the evening, Mr. Jethmalani's office clarified to The Hindu that he never said the money belonged to the BJP. “What Mr. Jethmalani said was that the money belonged to those who conducted the sting operation.”
