Jawan was not tortured: BSF chief

August 09, 2014 02:11 am | Updated November 16, 2021 07:02 pm IST - SRINAGAR:

Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Satyasheel Yadav, who was swept away into Pakistani territory in Jammu’s Akhnoor sector two days ago, was returned to Indian authorities with all his belongings on Friday.

Mediapersons were present in large numbers on either side of the International Border at the Suchetgarh Octroi Post, 25 km from Jammu, when Mr. Yadav was handed over by Pakistani Rangers to BSF officers after a flag meeting. Sources privy to the deliberations told The Hindu that two joint teams of the Rangers and the BSF conducted a physical and medical examination before declaring Mr. Yadav fit with no signs of physical or mental torture. The motorboat carrying Mr. Yadav, which developed a technical fault and got swept away to the opposite bank of the Chenab, was also handed over to the BSF along with two bullet-proof vests. Mr. Yadav was whisked away to the sector headquarters at Meeran Sahib for ‘debriefing.’ BSF Director-General D.S. Pathak told a press conference that Mr. Yadav received “very good treatment” in Pakistani custody.

Mr. Pathak said Mr. Yadav had neither been tortured nor subjected to any coercive questioning during the 52 hours he was in Pakistani custody.
