Jats in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday decided to suspend their pro-quota agitation for the next six months, a day after their Haryana counterparts called off their three-week-long stir, which caused massive disruption of rail traffic in the north.
The decision to suspend the stir was taken by a panchayat of Jats, chaired by Akhil Bhartiya Jat Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti president Yashpal Mullick, at Kafurpur near J. P. Nagar. It came in response to an assurance from the Centre that a decision on the Jats' demand for jobs in Central government under the OBC category would be taken within six months, Samiti vice-president Vikram Singh, told PTI.
The assurance was given by Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Social Justice Minister Mukul Vasnik to a Jat delegation in New Delhi recently. “The core committee of the Samiti would meet on April 10 to decide the dates of a Chetna Yatra to be taken out next month, to create awareness among Jats and to apprise them of the course of the agitation that ultimately has given the result in our favour,” said Colonel Singh.
