Eight search and rescue teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been made available to the Jammu and Kashmir government for prompt action in the event of a flood situation.
Two fully-equipped NDRF teams have been deployed at the Anantnag police station and Humhama in Srinagar. “Three more teams were airlifted from the NDRF base at Ghaziabad and Bhatinda on Tuesday morning. Two teams are being sent to North and South Kashmir and four being deployed in Central Kashmir,” said an MHA official.
NDRF Deputy Inspector-General R.K. Rana and other senior officers are in the Valley to coordinate with the local authorities and supervise relief and rescue operations.
Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, who toured the affected areas and held review meetings with the State officials, on Tuesday submitted an assessment report on the ground situation in Jammu and Kashmir to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Mr. Naqvi informed the Prime Minister about the preparedness on the part of the Central and the State agencies and suggested strengthening of the Jhelum river embankments. As part of a long-term solution, the Union Minister recommended that a sewage disposal system in the affected areas needs to be put in place.
Emerging out of the meeting, Mr. Naqvi told the media that there was no need for the people in the State to panic.
