Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told BJP MPs on Tuesday that he wanted to get the four enabling pieces of legislation dealing with the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday, cleared through consensus.

He was briefing the BJP’s Parliamentary Party in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A newly inducted member of the BJP, the former External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna, was present for a while at the meeting, sources said.

“The Finance Minister gave a detailed briefing to party MPs about all the four Goods and Service Tax Bills, and said these laws were based on the principle of shared sovereignty,” Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Ananth Kumar said after the meeting. “The Bills have been drafted after detailed discussions in the GST Council, which comprises all States.”

The MPs were also told that the new laws would usher in a “one nation, one tax” regime. The government proposes to launch GST on July 1.

At the meet, Congress leader and former Union Minister M.V. Rajasekharan’s letter showering praise on the Prime Minister was also mentioned by Mr. Kumar.
