Jagat Singh Mehta passes away

Former diplomat and educationist Jagat Singh Mehta, who was India’s Foreign Secretary between 1976 and 1979, died in Udaipur on Thursday following age-related ailments. He was 90.

Born in 1922 to Mohan Singh Mehta, a member of the Constituent Assembly of India in 1947, Mr. Mehta was a career diplomat from 1947 to 1980. He was a recipient of Padma Bhushan in 2002.

The cremation will be held in his hometown Udaipur on Saturday.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has condoled Mr. Mehta’s death.

Mr. Mehta was Charge d’affaires China from 1963 to 1966 and High Commissioner to Tanzania from 1970 to 1974. He had several books on diplomatic subjects to his credit, which included Militarisation in the Third World (1985), Negotiations for India (2006) and The Tryst Betrayed (2010).
