Taking serious note of the ghastly incident of the gang-rape of a girl in Delhi, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday shot off strong-worded letters to Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit, saying it was a “matter of shame” that such incidents happen with painful regularity.
Ms Gandhi on Tuesday night visited Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi to inquire about the condition of the 23-year-old victim, who is in a critical state, and sought “strictest possible measures” to ensure that there is no recurrence of such a barbaric crime.
Ms Gandhi, who was at the hospital for about 15-20 minutes, talked to the doctors and met the victim’s parents, according to Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi. Ms Gandhi was told by the doctors that the girl was in a critical state, he said.
The Congress leader said in her letter to Ms Dikshit that “such violence and criminality needs not only to be condemned, it calls for a concerted effort to fight it.”
In her letter to Mr Shinde, the Congress president said “It is a shame for us, who are responsible for the security of our cities that a young woman can be raped in a moving bus in the capital of the country and flung on to the street.”
Describing the incident as a “monstrous crime”, Ms Gandhi said this deserves not only universal condemnation but also the “government’s most urgent attention”.
“It is imperative that the police and other agencies concerned are sensitised to the dangers that our daughters, sisters and mothers face everyday. The security agencies must be motivated, trained and equipped to deal with the menace. I hope you will initiate immediate action to remedy the situation,” Ms Gandhi told the Home Minister.
In the letter to Ms Dikshit, Ms Gandhi said, “it is a matter of shame that these incidents happen with painful regularity and that our daughters, sisters and mothers are unsafe in our Capital Delhi.... I would urge you to take whatever steps are necessary to undertake community action, to strengthen law and order and to step up vigilance to protect women.”
Ms Gandhi told the Delhi Chief Minister that there was an “urgent need to demonstrate our sincerity and determination” and that “we are all horrified” over the incident.
She also assured Ms Dikshit “you have my support and support of our party organisation in whatever efforts you need to take to curb the menace”.

Such incidence will definitely see a sharp fall,if there will be strict law to deal with rapists and victims will not be traumatized further in the due legal procedure. If the court can produce few cases as an example,it will be a lesson to other criminals. In this case, the criminals where so sure that they will not be caught and they were following their routine life from next morning. This perception of the Law has to change in India.
The need of the hour is to teach our sons to respect women since
childhood. No action or law will be a panacea until and unless we teach
and talk about it from basic level. It is the mentality of men in our
country which needs to be changed and parents play a big role in this.
This is indeed very painful. The country should do more than policing to curb such incidents. We should control the pronographic industry and also the hindi film industry which promote irresponsible behaviour to a great extent.
Why are we politicising the issue?? Whose ever visits should be treated as
visitor then why full covers for politicians?? Are politicians more
important than VICTIM??
We are all pained to hear of this news. Every parent will be worried over their daughter's going outside the home. The culprits should be punished and the punishments should be published by the media so that it deters people with such intents. Apart from this root cause should be analyzed and steps should be taken to eliminate the mindset.
Our tears and prayers are there for the victims.
A Survey says Every 40 minutes a girl is being raped and killed in bihar. Even today there was one incident. We have to stop these kind of non human activities.
Our tears and prayers are there for the victims. In a nation where death penalty is opposed and genuine police encounters are also questioned by so-called "Human Rights Organisations", how are we going to control these incidents? What is the motivation for sincere, dedicated and efficient police personnel for doing their jobs? I think we cannot blame the law enactment and enforcement agencies for this lawlessness. The so-called "Human Rights Organisations" are to be blamed. Thinking about them, no sincere police officer can do their duty without fear. It is equally pathetic to see some learned people and academicians talking about the abolishing of death penalty through constitution. That means, in effect, that the hardcore criminals should be caught, case held for so many years and at the end of that have to be kept safely in jail by providing them with all amenities. This is the distinguished feature of our country. So, let us pray for the speedy recovery of the victims.
No doubt it is failure of Delhi Police & govt, to be ashamed of. But,
is this the only incident that we should feel ashamed?! Multi crore scams, Corruption by ministers and official, increasing crime rate, bad infrastructure and many more.
