Italy recalled its Ambassador to India Giacomo Sanfelice for “consultations,” on a day the Kerala Police filed a charge sheet against Italian marines Latore Massimiliano and Salvatore Girone before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kollam in the killing of two Indian fishermen off the Kerala coast three months ago.
The Italian gesture of displeasure over the charge sheet did not go down well with South Block.
According to India, Italy should have remained engaged than opting for this course of action.
Rome is angry with New Delhi not paying attention to its plea to let the marines be tried in Italy because the shooting incident occurred in international waters.
‘Killings accidental'
Italian Deputy Foreign Minister Staffan De Mistura, who is in Kerala, met the marines on Thursday and described the killings as “accidental.”

kerala is not like other states,in kerala if the italians were sent free
hands, there wont be any govt after that. the italians wont escape from
kerala, without the forceful hands of union ministry
It happened in international waters means anybody can kill anybody and claim it is an accident. Indian fishermen were killed and the italians have to abide by indian laws, India is a democratic country with laws and not some banana republic. I am sure that if these marines are left off the hook the italians would not juge them. We all know and the world knows what italian laws are all about, just look at their former prime minister, Berlusconi. How can anybody trust such a country where still reigns the maffia, camora and what not...
I still see Italians claim that the incident took place in international waters whereas India goes ahead with the trial in Kerala. While Italy insists, there is no clarification or reiteration of its position by India. There are reasons for Italy to be miffed if the incident has actually happened outside India's maritime boundary. We should not try them here in that case as there are well defined norms to that effect.
Italy should be thankful to India that they were not charged with acts
of terrorism. One judge has already told that their act amounted to
terrorism.
