Iran released during last weekend 15 Indian fishermen, who were arrested in October 22 last year, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted on Monday.

''I am happy to inform that Iran has released our 15 fishermen from Tamil Nadu. They were detained with their 3 Bahraini boats'', she said.

At the time of their arrest, the fishermen were on their way from Bahrain to Sharjah.

The court order that freed the fishermen from custody followed the release within a week by India of a UK citizen of Iranian origin, who was facing charges in India.

Experts observe that the release of the fishermen is a positive sign of India-Iran ties.
