A newly inducted Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer has been abducted and is suspected to have been killed by Meghalaya-based militants in South Garo hills, a senior government official said.

While the abduction has been confirmed, his body has not been recovered yet, said a senior IB official.

The abduction came to light when security agencies intercepted a phone conversation between Meghalaya-based militants. According to phone intercepts, he is believed to have been abducted on Thursday. He was in his vehicle when the militants pulled up alongside and apparently shot him dead.

A newly created militant group — Achick Songa An’pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) is suspected to be behind the incident. “We have intercepted phone calls between ASAK militants. They were saying they buried his body. We are yet to recover the body,” said a senior official.

The young Assistant Central Intelligence Officer was posted in Meghalaya recently and this was probably his first assignment.
