A Brisbane district court on Tuesday sentenced an Indian cabbie to 10 months in jail for sexually assaulting a teenager in Australia last year.

Harmeet Singh, 34, who is in Australia on a spouse visa, sexually assaulted the drunken 18-year-old after picking her up in his taxi from Fortitude Valley in the early hours of November 14.

The court was told the cabbie misbehaved with the passenger and offered her money with ulterior motives, when she disclosed that she could not pay the fare. Judge Milton Griffin said Singh had “a high degree of responsibility as a taxi driver” to ensure the safety of passengers, but did the opposite.
